We find that so many brides that walk in our doors are so unsure of timelines for their bridal needs. Many brides are concerned because they don’t know what to expect and when to expect it. Being a new experience for most brides, we know you would love all the help you can get so here’s to giving you a little sanity! We hope this helps your big day become a celebration of complete preparedness and joy.
1. The new traditional etiquette is much more relaxed than it used to be so many times the answer to most questions is “However you want it to be!”. This in itself is a great gift to brides so that your day may become a union of choices that are completely unique to you and your fiancé. Weddings are becoming more and more a natural blend of elegance and fun that represents the couple. Their ceremonial choices reflect what is important to them and show that in meaningful ways to their guests.
Shopping for a gown should be fun and easy. Make sure you have invited few enough guests that you feel totally comfortable making this important decision with each person’s input being expressed. If you have at least a year to plan that is the perfect time to buy your gown. Many brides feel they cannot make other choices until they can visualize their look. Gown shopping usually begins right after selecting a venue but sometimes before if the bride has an idea of what style of wedding she wants to consider. The designers on a standard shipping date take approximately 5 months from purchase to arrival. Add in 4-8 weeks for alterations. Some do offer rush or priority options on certain dresses but it may not be the exact dress you’ve got your eye on. Once you decide to try on gowns be prepared to buy one. This is because the designers often discontinue styles and you may come back later to purchase and it has become unavailable and you are stuck trying to have the “this is the one!” moment with a second choice gown. If you are getting married in 5 months or less consider buying a dress off the rack or better yet from a sample sale! You can get a great deal and take it home now.
Be prepared for alterations. Many brides see standard changes at around $300-600. Our changes are a la carte and on a price sheet so you know what to expect. Alterations can vary but typically you will prefer 4-10 weeks depending on your availability. Most brides enjoy a relaxed 8-10 weeks so they can flex around their work schedule for appointments. Many brides really want more than that when competing with other brides for the best appointment times especially for weddings in the summer months. Anytime 90% of the clientele are all using the services in the same 2 1/2 months of the year it’s going to take some planning. Be patient and flexible and it will all go great! Bridal seamstresses amaze me with their skills both sewing and the psychological coaching they provide to brides during the tail end and most stressful last weeks of wedding planning. So give your seamstress some love! She’s got a tough job and shows extreme grace under pressure. We love them!!
Bridesmaids typically take around 3 months to come in so many brides like to purchase them about 5 months in advance to have time for shipping and alterations. Again, some designers offer rush and can arrive as soon as 6-8 weeks. However this can be more stressful, especially if you have any out of town bridesmaids. Rush is only recommended if there is not an option to do them in advance. Alterations are most comfortable when there is a month between arrival and wedding date. Make sure your bridesmaids understand that they are the one to determine the size selected. Consultants in any shop are there to measure, show you the size chart for that designer and offer for you to try on samples. Keep in mind that all bridal sizes can run very different than clothing sizes and you should follow the chart as closely as possible. Consultants are also great for helping you find a style that will make everyone happy!
Well there you have it! A bridal salon timeline. Thank you for taking the time to read our tips. We hope they help with your planning and make for a more complete bridal experience!

Most brides that come to see us most often describe the gown they are looking for as either vintage or modern. These two forks in the road are the first steps in developing their bridal style after deciding silhouette. We have talked much about vintage but today I wanted to give you some great ideas of our best modern designs in the shop right now. New trends feature unusual details, glamour rhinestones, ombre effects, and ruffles. Let’s begin!
Morilee’s simple fitted mermaid style is perfect for a woman who loves to accessorize and make things her own. I love pairing it with our new jackets. You could take the accessories for a more romantic or glamorous look all your own.
For a less is more look the Alice by Sottero and Midgley (Maggie Sottero) is a stunningly simple yet glamorous choice. The wrap style waist is really flattering and the flowing chiffon is so very elegant!
Maggie Sottero’s couture line, Sottero and Midgley, takes a high fashion take on the ballgown with Juliette. The unusual detail folds at the neckline and unique folded skirt make you feel like you are runway ready for your big day!
Allure’s 8957 is a perfect gown for the style icon that doesn’t want inspired by the likes of Audrey Hepburn. Just simple ruched satin and flowing layers of tulle. You can never go wrong with a simple classic done well. There you have it! Just a few styles to show you some great modern looks for your amazing day. Call us at the shop to help you set up your personal appointment. Our one on one consultation will make it easy!
Have a great week!!!
I know how difficult it can be to find clothing you love that makes you feel flattered. So I also know that finding a wedding gown that makes you feel flattered is a big worry amongst brides. Many brides also worry because they have heard that the bridal sizes run small and force you into a bigger size than you would normally wear. The good news is most bridal designers use great boning construction in their gowns to give you a fit you wouldn’t dream of getting from your clothes. One of the most common things we hear at the shop is that the bride didn’t expect to look so good in so many styles. And for those of us like myself who are a little curvier, I have even more good news. Many of the styles simply look better on a curvier shape! Are you wondering where you can find sample sizes in 18 and up? You guessed it! Right here with us at Bridal Exclusives. We work hard to make sure you have the best choices in styles that are proven to look amazing on your shape. We have done the homework for you. All you have to do is come in and try them on! Let’s share a few of my favorites we have at the moment.
Beautiful, right? We can’t wait to show you the rest! Call us and make your appointment with a highly trained consultant today! We serve Oregon, Washington, and the entire region with two stores in the Portland Oregon metro.

So it is time to begin your gown shopping and you are wondering, “What do I need to know?”. Is it really an experience like on TV? Should I already know what I’m looking for? Well, we hear you! So here’s an interview with one of the most experienced bridal consultants in Portland to help you know what to expect and what advice she would give you before coming in. Enjoy!
Meet Jacquelyn! She has been consulting for over 6 years and has a fantastic reputation for thoroughly educating her brides and developing long lasting relationships with her clients. She works at our Tigard location and absolutely loves helping brides find their dream dress!
Q: Thank you for talking with us today! Let’s get right to it. What advice do you give your engaged friends about preparing for gown shopping?
A: They should sit down to discuss a budget for the wedding, find a venue, and then find the dress. And take care of these things first. They are the most important, set the tone for the wedding, and help ease a brides stress. Knowing this info and having it taken care of before anything else is key. Most brides find it easier to choose a gown knowing their location, budget, and general look and style of the wedding.
Q:What do you mean by “style of the wedding”?
A: I ask my brides, “What do you want guests to remember about your wedding?” Is your vision modern, romantic, casual, vintage? What is your personal style or your wedding day fantasy? This information helps me get in touch with who the bride is and what she sees when she visualizes her wedding. Or for brides that have trouble visualizing, it helps me take some simple answers and help her develop a style that is natural to her.
Q: What helps your brides the most while trying on dresses?
A: I love that at Bridal Exclusives we make sure each bride gets a chance to try different shapes she may be interested in and work from what is learned after that. Many brides fall in love with a shape they didn’t know would flatter their body. Getting that experience first makes them sure of their choice once found. I also think it is eye opening in general to find out what shapes do on your body for everyday clothing. I use the info I learned about myself when I go shopping all of the time!
Q: Any advice on number of guests or what to bring?
A: I think the number of guests is a personal decision but it is good to point out that the more guests brides bring the more difficult it can be for anyone including her to focus on her needs and not what everyone thinks. Choosing a gown is a very personal decision and with so many beautiful gowns it’s hard to expect everyone to love the same one or not state their opinions while you are just trying to hear your own voice. Most brides feel most comfortable with 2-3 guests but we always accommodate any guests they would like to bring. Many parties bring champagne and little treats to make it more of a party atmosphere during your appointment. It really makes a fun celebration!
Q:What are your favorite trends right now in bridal fashion?
A: I am loving the higher level of coverage on netting and lace illusion tops! I love that they are conservative, simple, and timeless. It promotes an ease and natural beauty that I love. I am also loving the new Art Deco 1920’s inspired styles. The soft lines and ease of movement in an unstructured dress is just amazing! I love the detailed beading they have.
Q: What is your favorite about helping brides?
A: Making friends! I love giving them a positive experience and being part of a memory they may have forever. I appreciate what a life experience this can be for her and being a part of that is just so incredible. I also love being creative and taking the tools I have to help her express her vision. There’s definitely something very artistic in creating a look for a bride and that provides me a creative outlet that is just great fun!
Thank you so much, Jacquelyn for sharing your thoughts with us!
And to all the brides out there we hope this helps your gown shopping experience! See you soon!
